October 18, 2018 - Shaun Berry

Optofluidic Microsystems

Lincoln Laboratory has developed processes for the design, fabrication, and demonstration of novel optofluidic microsystems. Our capillary-driven and electrowetting-controlled optofluidic devices find applications in liquid lenses, displays and optical shutters. This talk will provide an overview of optofluidics, plus highlight unique capabilities and technology developments at Lincoln that have enabled novel optofluidic devices and microsystems. Several current projects will be presented.

Shaun Berry , MIT Lincoln Laboratory

Shaun Berry received a B. S. in mechanical engineering from Northeastern University, Boston, MA, and a M. S. and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from Tufts University, Medford, MA. His doctoral research was focused on microfluidics and the electrowetting phenomenon.
In 1998 he joined MIT Lincoln Laboratory in Lexington, MA, where he is currently a Technical Staff member in the Chemical, Microsystems and Nanoscale Technologies group. He has worked on a variety of MEMS and microfluidic projects, which has included developing MEMS microswitches, variable focus liquid lenses, micropumps and nonmechanical beam steering devices. His current research interests are in developing microsystems for active optical devices, communications, and microhydraulics.
